A first-generation American from Oakland, Betial was first exposed to health system inequity while navigating complex physical and mental care needs for her mother who was exiled from Eritrea. That experience led Betial to commit to a career that would improve health system access for underserved communities. After studying English at UC Berkeley, she worked at The Permanente Medical Group with senior physician leadership to develop strategic care initiatives. Betial is now a third-year medical student at UC San Diego with the PRIME Health Equity dual-degree program. She has served as Student National Medical Association chapter president and UCSD Free Clinic pulmonology clinic manager, among many other leadership roles. She continues to mentor underrepresented minority students.
