Mission
Respond to the unmet basic needs of food & water for individuals affected by high-poverty or homelessness in San Diego County and in rural communities in Southeast Asia.
Our Story
According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, as many as 486,000 people in San Diego suffered from hunger and food insecurity in 2018, with 150,000 more continuing to live at-risk for food insecurity. That year, San Diego County also had the fourth-largest population of homeless individuals, unsheltered on the street or living in a vehicle (KPBS, 2018). On the other side of the globe in our co-founders’ heritage country of Vietnam, significant poverty persists in rural communities, accounting for upwards of 80 percent of the total population despite the nation’s economic growth (Freedom from Hunger, n.d.).
Benevolent Heart was born out of the belief that direct volunteerism can significantly impact these unmet needs, locally and abroad, so that no person should have to live with hunger.
